The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) is the main governmental research institution in Italy, and includes over 100 institutes and 8200 researchers. CNR is represented by the Institute of Clinical Physiology (http://www.ifc.cnr.it), the largest biomedical institute of the National Research Council’s Department of Medicine. The cultural infrastructure of the Institute of Clinical Physiology (IFC) is organized into four main areas of knowledge: molecular, cellular and experimental medicine; technosciences (information communication technology-biosensors-nanotechnology); clinical cardiovascular and integrative physiology and pathophysiology; environmental, molecular, social and clinical epidemiology.
At IFC today these topics can be studied in an integrated course of action that covers mechanisms of disease at the cellular and molecular levels, bioengineering and mathematical modeling, as well as experimental, clinical and epidemiological aspects, with constant attention to patient welfare and supported by state-of-art technology. IFC includes 354 personnel units (133 with tenure positions), including 110 researchers: 25 physicians, 25 biologists, 25 engineers, 11 chemists, 18 computer scientists, and 7 mathematicians.
